Hafiz, Choong Hann show fighting spirit before bowing out at All-England
    Saturday March 13, 2010

SEASONED campaigners Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Wong Choong Hann bowed out of the All-England badminton championships but not after showing great fighting spirit.

And their gradual rise in form augurs well for Malaysia’s preparation for the Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

Hafiz is now looking more confident while veteran Choong Hann is just one step away from earning a call-up to beef up the squad for the Finals.

On Thursday, Hafiz made three-time world champion Lin Dan of China work very hard to earn a 21-14, 21-18 win in the second round at the National Indoor Arena.

In other matches Friday Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark defeated Malaysia's Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen 21-18, 22-20; while Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia beat Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah of Malaysia 21-17, 21-11.

In fact, Hafiz was in good control of the second game when he led at 17-15 and 18-16. The defending champion then levelled the score and went on to prevent the match from going into a decider.

Hafiz was happy that he did not get a thrashing.

“I was not given a chance against Lin Dan but it does feel good that I was able to make him run for the points. That is quite satisfying for now,” he said.

“I am still not sharp as I want to be. In fact, Lin Dan won most of the points from my mistakes. I am determined to work on this area.”

Coach Hendrawan said that Hafiz was still not bold enough to take his chances.

“He is certainly playing better now but he needs to be more solid at the crucial stages. He could have taken the second game if he were braver at the net,” he said.

“But overall, I am happy with Hafiz in his outings in Europe. He rose to meet my challenges in the German Open (lost to Chen Long of China in the semi-finals) and the All-England. He has the fire to do well again.

“He has one tournament more – the Asian championships – before the Thomas Cup Finals and I hope he will be more stable. He is shaping up well for the team event.”

Choong Hann reiterated that he was ready to don national colours again if his services were required.

He came close to getting the better of Indonesian Simon Santoso before going down 21-17, 16-21, 12-21 in a 62-minute first-round match on Wednesday.

“I had the game going and I wished I was physically in better shape. But I know I will only get better if I give more focus to this area. I do lack training,” said Choong Hann.

“I have been shortlisted in the Thomas Cup squad and I am ready to give my best. I will leave it to the BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) to solve any problem that may arise from sponsorship matters involving my participation.”

Choong Hann is an independent player under the sponsorship of Dunlop and the BAM should be able to work things out with them.

The BAM have in the past struck deals with their official sponsors when they allowed the Yonex-sponsored Nusa Mahsuri players to be in the team when the national association were under contract with Goesen.

National singles coach Misbun Sidek said: “Choong Hann did well to give Simon a tough time. He also played well in the German Open. We have to take note of that.”

Currently, Choong Hann is seen as the better option for a place in the squad than players from the national back-up squad.

The only back-up shuttler who may be considered for the job is Tan Chun Seang.

Based on world ranking, Malaysia are set to name world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Choong Hann (14th), Hafiz (22nd) and Chun Seang (59th) in the team for the Finals.
